Sri Lanka has been ranked second among the countries most affected by extreme weather events in the Global Climate Risk Index 2019. In 2015, Sri Lanka ranked 98th, but made a swift jump to the second slot four years later, after the island suffered extensive losses, both in terms of deaths and property damage due to extreme weather events. Inadequacy and unpredictability of rainfall, coupled with prolonged spells of drought, are affecting traditional livelihoods such as fishing and agriculture of Northern Province.
Climathon Jaffna is a new initiative of Organic Movement of North & East (OMNE) together with Dilmah, taking this year to raise awareness and to seek future-oriented solutions centered on the City of Jaffna. Climathon is a year-round platform to create powerful solutions – with a world hackathon day (25th of October) at its core. It will give us the chance to translate climate action solutions into tangible projects, and to support climate positive businesses & start-ups and addressing local policy changes.
